November is Rotary Foundation month when we put special emphasis on the Rotary Foundation, the charitable arm of Rotary International. Our club will have a program on November 28 devoted to the Rotary Foundation with speakers Paul Hofslien and Jack Haugen (father of DG Kyle Haugen).

Just to remind you, the Foundation’s grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges in the world such as poverty, illiteracy and malnutrition with solutions that leave lasting impact AND, a designated portion of the funds are returned to Districts for community projects and club sponsored international projects. Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating and a unique funding model mean that the Foundation makes the very most of our contributions.

A portion of the Foundation’s efforts are specifically dedicated to promoting peace and polio eradication. By the way, October 24 was World Polio Day – you see a great video on the celebration at:

The end-of-year is a great time to look at your charitable contributions. Please consider making contributions to the Rotary Foundation, potentially designated to the Annual Fund – SHARE (that designates funds to come back to our District for community and international projects), one of the other listed funds and/or to the PolioPlus fund (we’re almost there!). Go to www.rotary.org and give by signing in through your My Rotary dashboard or send a check. Either way, you get individual credit toward Paul Harris award recognition.

Rotary is able to help those in need around the world because of donations made to The Rotary Foundation. November is Rotary Foundation Month in the Rotary Year. If you haven't already done so, now would be a good time to make a donation. Our Foundation director, Bill Klumpp, has made it easy by passing out your Rotary number along with a partially completed donation form. You can also make a donation on line. Have a good month.
Programs and Events

Thanks to Peggy Strom for coordinating speakers for the month of November.  And also kudos to new member Kay Baker for helping with contacts for upcoming speakers.  In the weeks ahead we will hear more about Century College and from the CEO of St. John’s Hospital.  Please invite a friend or colleague to our club meeting.

Our club is a co-sponsor of the Shoreview YMCA Turkey Trot.  This family friendly event is a 5K or 10 K run, walk or stroll around beautiful Island Lake Park in Shoreview.  The event runs from 9:00 AM to Noon on Saturday, November 18 from 9:00 AM to Noon.  We are looking for some Rotary volunteers to help out with event organization on Saturday.  If you are able to help put, please let Ken Hola or me know.

It’s that time of the year again – the time when we look into the great “Weather Ball” and select the two coldest days of December to ring the bell for the Salvation Army – not an easy task five weeks out!  Global warming has made it even more challenging – we’ve been hit with unseasonable warmth the past two years.  We’re on the books for Wednesday and Thursday, December 6th and 7th, starting at 1pm.  Cub apparently wants us to cover one door again this year.  Sign up for a two-hour shift at upcoming meetings.

This can be a very rewarding activity, as not only does the club get noticed, but we receive a lot of thanks.  Recall that the Salvation Army was first and longest “on the scene” when we had a tornado touch down in Shoreview some years ago.  They have certainly earned our support.

October 3 - Club Meeting
The subject of today's presentation was "Robo Investing" which refers to a  new type of online software which can manage an investment portfolio with minimal to no human involvement.  Our speakers, Trisha Qualy and Tom Rippberger from Advisor Net Financial, provide consulting services to  investment advisory firms and have studied this new approach in order to help their client firms decide if it something they want to offer their customers.  The optimal candidate for robo investing is someone who does not want to hire a financial advisor, doesn’t have enough assets to hire a financial advisor yet, or someone who has been a do-it-yourself investor, but no longer wants to select investments, rebalance and place trades on their accounts.

Robo advisors automatically select investments and build an individuaized portfolio that will track toward an individual's investment goals.  Performance will typically be at or perhaps slightly below the performance of an average portfolio maintained in the "normal" way.  The big advantage is the significantly lower cost of this approach.  One limitation is that this new tool has only come into existance in 2009, therefore it has not been tested in a bear market.  It can also be over-ridden, allowing human decision making to enter in.  Our speakers closed by concluding that this is here to stay and will likely grow as an approach.  They presented information predicting which jobs are likely to be done in the future by machines vs. humans.  Investment Advising fell somewhere in the middle.  At the top of the list was "loan officer" which shows a 98% probability of becoming an automated vs. human process.  Thinking about a new career?  According to the info presented, you'd be best served by going to medical or law school as these jobs show less than a 1% change of becoming mechanized in the future!

October 10 - Club Meeting
The Club welcomed visiting Rotarian Bill Nielson from St. Paul and former Club member Jeff Riddlehoover.  Jeff talked briefly about the Mounds View School District's request for a $165 million capital referendum to add space to all of the schools which are now operating over capacity.

The guest speakers were Ann Kay and Bill Jones from the Rock N Read Project. The project's mission is to use singing to unlock children's potential for reading and learning. They discussed the importance of children learning to read and future success in life. Based on research, the Rock n Read program has been shown to improve reading by one full grade level with an investment of about 13.5 hours in the program. They have received two State grants to expand the program to different schools. The first State grant helped create a mobile computer lab on a former MTC bus that can have up to 30 students use a software program that is designed to improve reading skills through the use  of music.  The second $500,000 grant will help expand this program to more classrooms around the metro area and state.
October 17 - Club Meeting
We were pleased to host Rotary District Governor Kyle Haugen at today's meeting.  Kyle hails from the Prior Lake Club and has the distinction of being, at age 40, one of the youngest Rotary District Governors to ever hold the office.  Also in attendance was former District Governor Gary Campbell from the Anoka Club.  DG Haugen is a third generation Rotarian.  He raised $2,500 for the RI Foundation at his wedding reception several years ago and has already named his wife and child as Paul Harris Fellows.  This is a man who walks the talk!  He is an articulate spokesman for the Foundation and congratulated our club on our strong history of contributions.  He recounted his experience of traveling to Haiti seven years ago following the earthquake there and seeing the inherent unfairness of the way so much of the world lives.  In addition to comments about the Foundation, Kyle reminded us of the importance of becoming more visible in the local community and to not only attract but retain new members as well as to focus on recruiting more women and people under 40.  This is true across our Rotary District, where only 4% of members are under 40 and 32% are female.  He also highlighted a new focus for our district starting this year.  A task team is being formed to get involved in the problem of human slavery/sex trafficking.  This "business" has grown to be the second most profitable in the U.S. today - second only to sale of illegal drugs!  He encouraged anyone interested in becoming involved to contact the district.

October 24 - Club Meeting
Our speaker today was Franklin Gummadi, who was accompanied by his wife Shirley Franklin. Franklin was employed at 3M for 33 years but the couple is now retired.  They are the founders of an organization known as Pushpa which operates in Franklin's home country of India.  Pushpa was founded in 2006 with the the objective of helping the rural poor in India.  They intended to focus in three areas:  Children's education, basic public health, and community development with the initial focus on community development.  This took the form of the issuance of micro loans to help villagers in the area of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh India start small businesses as a means of support.  Initial results were positive, but gains have waned in later years.  The focus of the organization has recently shifted to children's education in the region, working to get and keep all children in school.  The Caste system is still very much alive and well in India, however, which has made it very difficult for members of lower castes to obtain higher education.  There is still also a cultural barrier against educating females into high school and beyond.  Our club, through Bob Freed, has been talking with Franklin about the potential for us to partner with Pushpa in some way.  These talks are continuing.

October 31 - Club Meeting - BOO!
The Club welcomed visiting Rotarian Ron Hughes from the Excelsior club and Diane Peterson, Kent's wife. The guest speaker was Jenny Hanson who serves as the Gymnastics coach at the University of Minnesota. Jenny first showed a video about the very successful Women's Athletic Program at the University.  She then reviewed the very successful gymnastics program at Minnesota indicated that the team had won 3 of the last five Big Ten Championships and qualified for the National Championship on two occasions. She noted that she currently has 12 full scholarships that she can offer in the gymnastics program. She also showed a video featuring the Minnesota gymnastics team and answered several questions from Club members.
