Today's speaker was Carol Nelson, MD from the White Bear Rotary Club. Carol is in the process of organizing a global grant request to help fight malaria in Sierra Leone and hopes our club will be able to contribute to the project. Sierra Leone has one of the highest burdens of malaria in the world. The country's entire population is at risk of the disease and it is one of the country's leading causes of death and illness. Malaria is the reason behind nearly four in ten hospital stays countrywide. Treatments include use of anti-malaria medications as well as preventative measures such as using treated bed nets.
