President's Corner
The month of August brought us our annual Taste of Hops & Vines fundraising event and boy did it not disappoint! Each and every one of you should be incredibly proud of your efforts. Even with a lighter slate of vendors and lower than expected ticket sales, your efforts saw us to our most successful monetary event to date. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

We heard from the Sheriff's department and the owner of Dependable Solutions on the topic of fraud and scams this past month. There was lots of great information and ways to best protect ourselves from bad actors trying to access our information and take what they can. Reflecting on the information presented, I can't help but think how great it is organizations like Rotary exist. It's so, so easy to get caught up in all the 'bad' we hear on a daily basis, but it sure is nice to belong to a group of people doing good.

If you know of someone who you think would bring good information to the club, be a dynamic and thought-provoking speaker or have an interesting topic to share, there is room on the speaker list. Please just let me know if you do fill a speaking slot.

Looking forward to another month with you!

Report from Our Exchange Student - March
Oliver Gamson writes "March has been a beautiful month in Vienna and has brought along with it very nice weather. Everything is beginning to bloom, and soon wherever I go there will be beautiful pink and white trees.
Earlier this month I danced in my third ball opening, and on the 11th, I had the opportunity to play with my orchestra in Hofburg palace, which is a very famous palace in Vienna and holds a lot of historical significance. The concert was featured briefly on Austrian national television and actually was a Rotary fundraiser event. On the 26th, I had the final concert with my orchestra, where we played Mozart‘s Requiem. This concert was held in a stunning 300-year-old church where Mozart, among many other famous composers, performed.

My family and I also spent a day in Bratislava, which I enjoyed a lot. It is amazing to me that so many European capitals — Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Bratislava — are so close to each other. Someone could do a day trip to any of these cities if they would like. I have now had the chance to visit each of these cities, and these trips have added a lot of richness to my exchange.
My German is becoming better and better, and I can now almost always get around Vienna without needing to switch to English. It is a very exciting process, and my host family has put a lot of effort into helping me learn more.
On April 24th until May 11th, I will embark on a trip through Germany, Belgium, France, Monaco, Italy, and Slovenia. This is a Rotary-organized trip, and I will be traveling with other exchange students. I am very much looking forward to the trip and sending an update on the things we do! On March 29th I will be moving to my third host family, and April 11th will mark three months before I return to the U.S."

Oliver's three host families came to support him during his concert. Not all of his siblings were there, but it meant to a lot to see almost everybody.

March 11 - Club Meeting
Former Rotary District Governor Clare Lillis was our guest speaker today. He was accompanied by his wife Kathy. Clare has been very involved in Rotary's efforts to end human trafficking and gave an update on the work of "Renew Hope" and other organizations that are providing support for victims who have been trafficked.  Unfortunately this continues to be a thriving $150 billion industry in this country.  Equally unfortunate is the fact that the state of Minnesota continues to be the third largest state in the country in terms of trafficking activity.  "Renew Hope"  focuses on two critical avenues for impact:  Education & Awareness and Survivor Life Recovery Services.  Stephanie Cosgrove has been leading our club's efforts in this area.  It has been difficult to get educational efforts into our schools, given all the demands on their time and resources, but we are currently working with students through Quincy House whom we have supported in other ways as well.

March 25 - Club Meeting
Today's speaker was Carol Nelson, MD from the White Bear Rotary Club.  Carol is in the process of organizing a global grant request to help fight malaria in Sierra Leone and hopes our club will be able to contribute to the project. Sierra Leone has one of the highest burdens of malaria in the world. The country's entire population is at risk of the disease and it is one of  the country's leading causes of death and illness.  Malaria is the reason behind nearly four in ten hospital stays countrywide.  Treatments include use of anti-malaria medications as well as preventative measures such as using treated bed nets.
