District Governor Dayle Quigley Visiting out club September 20th
District governor Quigley will be visiting our club in-person this month. Dayle joined Rotary after sending her daughter to Lativa as a Rotary Exchange student. She was so impressed she jumped right in. She has been president three times serving in 2010-11, 2015-16, and 2016-17. She has been on the District Grants Subcommittee since 20--, and an Assistant Governor for Area 14 since 2018. She has chaired her club’s Rotary Foundation committee, worked as the Youth Exchange Officer, and facilitated Visioning Programs around the district. She traveled to Delhi India in 2011 for a National Immunization Day, to Brazil for the International Convention in 2015, and to Israel with her husband on a Cultural Exchange in 2018.
Please, if at all possible, attend the meeting In-Person.

Thanks to all of you who helped plant the Pollinator Garden. Assisting us were members form the Shoreview Garden Club the City Natural Resource Team. In addition, the Rice Creek Watershed District partnered with our club and the city paying 75% of the cost to install a Rain Garden.
Rotary International has prioritized pollinator gardens. Without pollinators 75% of the world’s plants would disappear and 35% of our food supply would disappear. Pollinator gardens will help maintain and increase the number of pollinators in the surrounding area. As the number of pollinators decline worldwide the pollinator garden will be a small demonstration in support of a much larger mission.
Those insects will then contribute to pollinating more plants outside of the small garden our club built. Not only will the garden be beneficial for the environment, but also an educational benefit to inform the community about the pollination process and what is going on in the world around them.
Today's speaker was Shoreview City Manager, Brad Martens. Brad has been in this role for a little over six months now, having been hired after a long search to replace Terry Schwerm following Terry's retirement in late 2021. Brad came into the role with 17 years of management experience in other, smaller city organizations. He knew he had big shoes to fill given the high regard in which Terry was held during his 20+ years as Shoreview's administrative leader. But he spoke appreciatively of the very warm welcome he has received. He also noted the unusual level of trust that exists between city leaders and its many partners, such as builders and developers. Such is not always the case! Shoreview continues to have a AAA bond rating and is a much sought-after place to live. After months of trying unsuccessfully to buy a home within the city boundaries, he ended up settling in New Brighton and therefore is still within the boundaries of the Mounds View School District - also a much sought-after amenity for Twin City home buyers. Brad discussed some of the new construction going on within the city and provided an update on the very controversial proposal to develop the former Gospel Mission site on Snail Lake. "Due Dilligence" is still underway with a formal proposal expected in September.
Today's speaker, Sif Jensen, joined us remotely from Denmark. Sif spoke to us about the Human Library. This is an international not-for-profit organization which Dave Newman had learned of and therefore reached out to, hoping our club could also hear about their unique mission. The Human Library is, in the true sense of the word, a library of people. They host events where "readers" can borrow human beings serving as open books and have conversations they would not normally have access to. Every human book from their bookshelf represents a group in society that is often subjected to prejudice, stigmatization or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin etc. It is a forum to ask questions about difficult issues. They have hosted events in over 80 countries, with their mottos being "Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover" and "Unjudge Someone".
